MPD:
Did French American restaurant-cum-dance club MPD line its walls with photos of models with the hope of making real-life beautiful people feel more at home? Its prime location in the—yep, you guessed it—Meatpacking District suggests such a goal is not out of reach. Coming to you courtesy of the Koch brothers who live and die by the “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” philosophy, this pseudo-retro spot is open for lunch, dinner, late night snacks and eventually, brunch. While the cuisine does deliver, don’t expect a “regular” meal—gorgeous sky-high ladies and suited thirty-somethings mill about and furiously network during any peak mealtime. If the frenetic dining area becomes too much, you can move to the bar and sip a hot-pink Lavender Fix (Belvedere or gin, Dolin Blanc, lavender) or the framboise-tea infused La Bogosse. Just beware—bevies and bites will both have you reaching for your black Amex. Be sure to hang around until after midnight, when the tables disappear and make way for late night dance parties. It's also the time when MPD serves up serious bass and fancy nibbles in hopes of keeping the chronically underfed from keeling over. But who doesn't want to look at rail-thin models while stuffing their face with truffle tater-tots?
