You’ve been to your share of Japanese restaurants in the city, but the experience at Mr. Robata is unlike any other. Don’t let the location scare you (ahem, the "gentlemen’s club" next door)—the mixologist-crafted cocktails and delicious dishes more than make up for the neighbors. Signature drinks like the Nashi Spice pair flavors in a too-tempting-to-resist blend, while others like the Lychee Martini add a twist to traditional favorites (both $16). An extensive selection of sake and wines are also available, and beer aficionados will enjoy the usually hard-to-find imports. Hungry? Light bites like the Shrimp, Quinoa and Avocado Salad ($16) are a great start. Special maki rolls are a treat for sushi-lovers, while the Robata (a rustic Japanese grilling technique) menu is perfect for those who would rather not go raw. The relaxed atmosphere is completed by a soothing Euro-Japanese music mix, an eye-catching open kitchen and chic, earthy décor, all of which complement Chef Masaki Nakayama’s simply complex flavors.
