My Little Secret: My Little Secret, Little Italy’s late take on the hidden-bar trend, could have ended up being the Sbarro of speakeasies. This joint, across the street from its sister pastry shop, Caffé Palermo (speaking of tourist-approved destinations), is buried just a few subterranean stairs off of Mulberry Street. Inside though, the place is pretty gorgeous, festooned with empty wine barrels, scattered wooden two-top tables and a fully-stocked bar. A glowing plexiglass etching of a Tommy Gun, presumably to deter hooligans not partial to bootlegging, separates the back room from the front. As for that demon hooch, the cocktail list (e.g. martini, $12) is still in development, and all the beer comes in bottles, so wine is the name of the game here...$9-12 will get you a real nice glass served up by a familiar and gregarious Little Italy local behind the bar. It's pretty obvious My Little Secret wasn't designed to stay that way—and, yeah, it is a little cheesy—but we love it anyway. You’re in Little Italy...indulge in some parmesan! |
