At this neighborhood watering hole, Anthony Mackie (the gorgeous actor who plays everything from a Shakespearean Pentheus to Eminem's nemisis) calls the shots and mixes the martinis. While Mr. Mackie has made no indication of turning bartending into his full-time gig, his New Orleans-influenced cocktail lounge can luckily stand on its own good looks. Artist Justin Bua's renderings of musicians (from urban DJs to dapper jazz bands) line NoBar's walls, embodying the vibrant energy of its namesake city. The soft glow of the bar's vintage light fixtures create an old-timey intimacy that makes it easier to wink to the bartender "make it sexy" (the city's signature splash of grenadine in a Corona). The cocktails themselves are a bit pricey for the bar's Nostrand Ave location, but a respectable happy hour (select cocktails go from $12 to $4 until 7pm), night-long specials (margaritas drop down to a mere pittance—$4—on Thursdays) and cheap bar bites keep this spot accessible to most and ensure a crowd full of characters—much like the Big Easy itself.
