Nuela:
Where else can you go to taste the “Devil’s Sweat” alongside the “Summer Wind”? South of the Equator, naturally, or in this case, south of the Garment District at Nuela. The name stems from Nuevo-Latino, and this massive eatery will certainly give you a nuevo-opinion about Latin-American cuisine. Toss all thoughts of chintzy décor and rice and beans out the window—the multi-faceted space is decorated in brilliant reds and sleek blacks for a modern, industrial feel, while the menu features everything from $9 oxtail empanadas to a $65 roasted suckling pig. Before you park at the central ceviche bar, pull up to the bar bar and dive into their cocktail menu ($12) where you can sample the classics (mojito, caipirinha, cuba libre) and the cleverly-named originals. Among both lists, the authentic Pisco Sour and the Nightflower (house-made acai brandy/ Farmers gin/ lemon/ orange blossom water/ egg white) are the standouts. Just be sure to pack those dolares, the exchange rate is working against you here.
