Nuyorican Poets Café: At 33, Nuyorican Poets Café is probably older than you. The nonprofit venue, born in founder Miguel Al-garin’s living room, is now a second home to everyone from renowned slam poets to aspiring hip-hop artists yearning to be the next Mos Def. Though the party long ago left Algarin’s apartment, the red ornaments, colorful paintings, and broken table lamps give the current venue a homey feel. There’s always something going on, whether it’s a Latin jam session or a comedy performance. If you want a night full of flava and funk, then make a cameo here. Remember, the simple drink menu consists of only bottled beers. But really, you’re not here to get crunked, you’re here to get cultured. Talk, talk. |
