Oak & Iron:
Brooklyn’s already teeming with Midwestern transplants and it seems the bar scene’s no different with new Greenpoint joint Oak & Iron. Sam Mason, the brain behind Lady Jay’s and Tailor, opens yet another ode to all-American watering holes, bringing his casual country concept to Franklin St. Saddle up to the oak-and-iron bar (natch) for a whiskey clean or frothy brew, with the bar menu boasting 20 whiskeys, 12 draft beers and a few no-frills cocktails. Kick up your boots while the quarter-chewing country-western jukebox croons tunes by Tom Waits and Hank Williams, or settle into a booth to take in the kitschy Americana atmosphere, replete with swinging saloon-style doors and framed photos of sideshow freaks and Miles Davis. Sure, the seemingly never-ending influx of heartland hipsters into Brooklyn may be annoying, but this is one Midwesterner we’re happy to let infiltrate the ‘hood.
