Octavia's Porch:
While Octavia's porch, an East Village eatery, touts its menu as "global Jewish cuisine," the restaurant itself feels much closer to home. With caramel-colored walls, copper fixtures and warm lighting, Octavia's more resembles an actual porch—of the shabby chic variety—than a place out of the Roman Jewish ghetto for which it is named. But by jazzing up Jewish favorites—knishes made with wild mushrooms and beer mustard, roasted chicken with challah and date stuffing, and gefilte fish with lime and horseradish—former Top Chef contestant Nikki Cascone’s dishes would be a delight even in Octavia's storm cellar. Creative drinks like Spicy Pepper Martinis, Bourbon Hot Cider and Chocolate Vodka Egg Creams taste almost sinful. With portion sizes that would please any Jewish mother, Octavia's Porch is one far-East Village location worth shlepping to.
