Onda:
Even though the skinny bar stools make it hard for even a size-two tush and the cabinetry behind the bar looks purposely “vintage-d,” the Financial District’s new Latin bistro Onda is worth the trek. Imaginative drinks and tasty plates from executive chef Raymond Mohan, former co-owner of Plantain, make up for the sparse crowds and uninspired provincial décor. The playful and flirty staff doesn’t mind doting on the patrons at the 12 seat bar, slinging carefully crafted (and cleverly named) drinks—like the gin and cucumber “Si—Porque No?” or the Pisco Sour made with egg white and nutmeg. Feeling peckish? The Mixto Ceviche—a delicate portion of citrus-cooked shrimp, clams and crab served with a spicy charred salsa—is a tasty (but tiny) aphrodisiac. It may take till spring thaw for this hidden gem to get noticed, but till then it’s just more room for the rest of us. Open Mon.-Thurs. 5pm-12am, Fri.& Sat. 5pm-2am.
