One Mile House:
Paying homage to a time when a night out on the Bowery came with a complimentary knifing, One Mile House maintains century-old charm with added class and—thank goodness—security. The cavernous tavern’s interior is stocked with photos of the ‘hood back at the turn of the century (not Y2K, you n00b, the other one), and is highlighted by a potbelly stove. “Immigrant” bar grub includes pierogies ($12), bacon-cheddar matzo balls (now those ain’t kosher!, $11) and Shepherd’s pie ($9). The beer list is potent—far more interesting than when the Bowery served only watered-down swill—featuring 30 different lines with rotating options such as Troeg’s Mad Elf ($8). Large-format beer bottles, “beer-tails,” plenty o’ straight booze and old-timey cocktails ($12) are also present, allowing far more routes to getting blotto than were available to those poor suckers in 1902.
