Passersby might see “ONEGIN” on this restaurant’s awning and think the owners are glorifying a singular alcoholic spirit. More astute onlookers will recognize it as Pushkin’s title character and rightly conclude another liquor (namely vodka) makes a bigger splash in the Russian venue. Though knowledge of 19th-century literature may help you identify the portraits painted on the ceiling, all you’ll really need to enjoy Onegin is the desire for a night out and a love (tolerance?) of loud music. The space is at once opulent and rustic with upholstered thrones next to wheelbarrow-esque cocktail tables, chandeliers hanging above tabletop metal lanterns, and women in towering stilettos hanging out with men in blue jeans. Diners merely looking for a dinner of beef tenderloin stroganoff ($28) will likely stick around for a night of cocktails—perhaps a Birch Royal (Prosecco, St Germain and birch juice, $12), a couple shots of vodka and mayyybe one gin....
