Ono:
Oh no, there’s nothing subtle about Ono. Jeffrey Chodorow’s highly stylized, bi-level Japanese eatery is apparently geared more toward trendies than foodies if the large pre-clubbing crowds can be believed. House music plays loudly, the pretty lighting is fashionable and even a bit functional in most spots, and service is impeccable if and when guests are finally seated. Kobe beef comes still sizzling on a mini-grill, skewers shine with prime meats and fresh veggies, and inventive sushi roll combos are artfully arranged. The sake list doesn’t disappoint. During the summer, tables overlooking the Garden of Ono outdoor lounge are recommended. In colder months, opt for a table overlooking the bar area. Weekends can be a mess, but that comes with this neighborhood. Ono’s cuisine doesn’t always meet the hype, but doing so would be difficult.
