OSO at Southampton Inn: Climb the few steps down into the Southampton Inn’s restaurant OSO, and you may think you have the wrong place—carpeted floors, mirrored walls, a drab peach design and leather booths finish off what looks like the generic dining room of hotel restaurants everywhere (yes, complete with the family of five arguing in the corner). But what Oso lacks in cutting-edge design (we recommend dining in the courtyard for a peaceful respite), it makes up for with surprisingly elegant cuisine and an extensive cocktail list. The specialty sips like “The Pacific” (Crop Cucumber Vodka, dry sake, $11) were poured with a heavy hand, but we’re not the type to complain when our drinks are made too strong. Meanwhile, the dinner menu showcases local ingredients like Long Island corn and fresh scallops, with a presentation as star-worthy as the dishes themselves. For penny-pinchers, the generously-portioned $32 prix-fixe may just be the place’s highest selling point. Hotel guests are rarely privy to such quality cuisine, and for those just passing through, you may miss out on atmosphere, but definitely don’t miss the desserts…they are oso decadent. |
