This venue has closed. Love the vibe of a Lower East Side gallery opening but can’t stand the thought of choking down another plastic cup of crap chardonnay? Panda, Chrystie Street's newest watering hole, may be the answer. A bright and lofty space featuring stark whitewashed walls, Panda is an art gallery, bar and coffee shop rolled into one. Come during their extensive half-off happy hour (4pm-9pm) and you’ll never look back at free-wine-and-cheese mobfests again. Sip away on a glass of house sangria ($6) or a sake cocktail ($8), as you peruse the rotating exhibit of local artists…because doesn’t art always look better with a drink in your hand? Or, stop by on your way to work and get a bit o' culture while you buy a cup of Joe. While Panda seeks the mid-day laptop crowd, its sleek wooden benches aren't exactly tushie-friendly. Your best bet is to stay on your feet, after all, you want to be good and ready when the late-night crowd rolls in and those benches turn into premium dance space.
