Peels:
This “all grown up” hipster haven, is a modernized country diner in the heart of the Lower East Side with some top-notch grub courtesy of the same cool dudes behind the nearby (and much darker) Freeman’s. Upstairs at Peels you’ll find a sophisticated dining room serving such non-standards as plancha-seared squid ($11) and housemade lil’ smoky sausages (not quite like they used to serve you in the elementary school cafeteria, $13). Downstairs, there’s a cozy cafe one can pop in to for a quick sweet and a coffee (Peels serves Stumptown joe exclusively) or relax with a long brunch (try the “Build-A-Biscuit”). A full bar is also available, with some fun cocktails (how can you pass on the “Dirty Teetotaler”?), prestigious wine line, respectable beer list (La Chouffe $13), and even some fun “leaded” milkshakes like the Chocolate Whiskey Velvet. There’s almost too much going on at Peels, but ultimately, this is a place where one can settle in for the day or night and constantly find something worth doing—unless, of course, one hates eating meat and getting drunk.
