Pera Soho:
Downtown gets a bite of Turkish delight with new Eastern Mediterranean eatery Pera Soho. The Thompson St. spot is a spinoff of the popular Pera Mediterranean Brasserie in Midtown, and fans of the original will be gleeful to find that some of their flavorful faves made it onto the downtown menu. Pera signatures include the well-spiced lamb “adana” ($27), grilled prawns with coco beans ($14), mezes like crispy phyllo rolls ($6) and the wonderful warm hummus with pastirma ($8). There’s also a slew of new seafood-focused fare, like fresh fluke crudo ($11) and salmon wrapped in grape leaves ($29). The elevated Eastern Mediterranean cuisine comes courtesy of executive chef and notorious commitment-phobe Ryan Skeen (formerly of Resto, Iriving Mill and Allen & Delancey, just to name a few), and the refinement is matched in the décor. The stylish space stays true to its Turkish roots, nodding to its namesake neighborhood with historic photos and a bold mural of a Turkish tram, but mixes in sleek modern pieces and glam white accents for an easy downtown elegance. Pera patrons will be pleased with the new outpost, but with Chef Skeen’s track record (four restaurants in as many years), here’s hoping it sticks around.
