Peri Wine Bar: Though the city has no shortage of wine bars, there are few focused on Turkish and Mediterranean varietals, and even less (er, none) that offer mead (honey wine, a.k.a. the oldest form of booze) on tap. If you’re not in the mood for an ancient pour, dive into their impressive list (120 bottles deep)—the average glass costs around $9-$15 and you’ll feel far cooler name-dropping a Yakut (a traditional Turkish wine, $32/bottle) at your next dinner party than your usual Malbec. The knowledgeable staff is happy to guide you while you snack on delicious crostinis (3 for $9, 6 for $15) ranging from ricotta and fig with honey to soppressata and hummus (trust us). The perfectly whimsical décor, complete with art-filled chalkboards, exposed brick, fanciful chandeliers and romantic lighting (an upgrade from the grime of its predecessor, Essex Ale House) makes Peri a perfect choice for a first date or rekindling the flame after the 41st. Let’s just hope rowdy concert-goers around the corner at Mercury Lounge don’t catch sight of Peri’s awning…though if the owner doesn’t take down the tacky Christmas lights, ruining an otherwise impeccable ambience, they just might.
