Pok Pok Ny:
Distance does make the heart grow fonder, and the stomach larger, for lovers of all things spicy. Compared to its sister’s digs in the LES, Red Hook proudly parades its pandanous leaf-infused water and foot-long menu to all of its eat-in customers. Just because this hot (get it!) spot is a bit off the beaten bike path doesn’t mean you won’t be waiting for an hour. Relax and grab a beer slushy ($6) or a refreshing drinking vinegar ($4) while you hang out in their waiting area out back. Specials like the "Saa Yaat Makham" with young tamarind leaf salad, with pork, onions, tomatoes, shallots, chilies, and garlic will run you about $14, or opt for something lighter like the "Tom Khai Dao" fried egg salad ($10). Pretty much everything has a level of spicy, so don’t be afraid to ask for the kitchen to tone it down otherwise you may end up spitting out your "Papaya Pok Pok" ($8.50). Not that we are speaking from experience or anything.
