Pomme: Pomme is a French restaurant with Greek servers, plenty of Scotch and a DJ spinning American pop hits. Yes, it’s a United Nations-style mishmash of a joint, and the food, drink and company is as good as the world is wide. Set in a dark, quasi-romantic spot on a sleepy Astoria street corner, the menu is straight French food with solid portions at superior prices: cheesy garlic escargot ($8), steak tartar ($12), three types of mussels ($14) and quintessential steak frites ($24). A foot-long cocktail menu features interesting ingredients combined in unusual ways, like the dirty martini with bleu-cheese-stuffed olives ($12). Wines are French and decent, the Scotch selection is fantastic and the beer is fine, though nothing to write home about. At 9pm, the calm bistro abruptly (and somewhat oddly) transitions to a rowdy American-style lounge, complete with pounding DJ beats. While it’s a bit strange, the shift does manage to elevate the super-fun and inebriated crowd to a whole new level of socializing. And isn’t “fun” the international language?
