Porters New York:
It’s been suggested that Porters is trying for a 1920s dining car thing. Okay, the place is narrow, but the coral-hued art deco look comes off more like the lobby of a middling hotel. Or, hey, a hotel bar. You know, the sorta place where you’d only drink if you were actually staying in the hotel. The lights are dim and the candles flicker, but something—maybe the icy bartender, maybe the Young Republicans, maybe the 40-somethings so obviously on a Match.com date—just kills the romance. On Sunday nights there’s live jazz upstairs. The garden is lovely, all stone walls and leafy green, but that’s only open in the summer. And you’d still have to deal with the less than friendly staff.
I went here for lunch. The food was mediocre, as was the wine. The decor is hideous. They were playing some of the worst funk-disco I ever heard, and the waistaff did not appear to speak English. On the plus side, the bartender admitted, in her Russian (?) accent that she was "be-headed". I asked her to repeat herself. She said, "I am be-headed. I make mistakes all the day today". That was actually cute. This place has a vibe like it's not being run for a profit.
