Prima Strada:
Before heading to the East Village, it’s wise to prepare yourself for anything insane to happen—but Prima Strada is the perfect home-away-from-home restaurant to avoid that task indefinitely. The steel and marble “all-day cafe” (aptly named “First Street,” in Italian) sells 9th Street Espresso, pastries ($5) and sandwiches ($7-$11) through the day. At night, they transition to a sustainable marine-life-stocked menu courtesy of chefs David Malbequi and Mathieu Palombino, both from fancy restaurants you’ve surely heard of but probably never been to. Appetizers are small, but intriguing (sardines, $9); there are burgers and fries available for your friend who still eats like a persnickety child ($14) and avant-garde desserts abound. Try the house-made limoncello or a tipple from Summit Bar vet Greg Seider’s cocktail menu, where offerings lean toward classic and soon-to-be-classic recipes like the bourbon Amaro old-fashioned ($13). Prima Strada is a rare NYC café, indeed—you’ll come early, stay late and still never want to leave.
