Project Parlor: When looking for a Victorianeque, absinthe-slinging bar, pretty much the last place you'd expect to find one is around the corner from Jay Z's old place in Bed-Stuy. And yet, there stands Project Parlor, a kind of free-styled addition to the notorious (and increasingly morphing) neighborhood. Unlike other bars that claim artsy alliteration with irony ("a delightful boozerie peddling potent potables and other curious liquids") there is no pretension at Project Parlor, just art and alcohol. Silent films lightly illuminate the back wall, as patrons sit on parlor couches and play board games. Megan the bartender will happily talk up Barcelona while serving a brilliant Black Currant Bramble (Bombay Sapphire Gin, Black Currant Jam, and Lime Juice, $8), or a witty White Oxacan (Stoli Gold Vodka, Kahlua, Coconut Milk, and Mexican Chocolate, $8). While there are no beers on draft (yet), the bar's five types of Absinthe make up for it. Watch the absinthe fountain drip as you sink into a Meadow of Love ($16), and forget your 99 problems...because Project Parlor won't be one. |
