Pulqueria:
While many brothers and sisters struggle to even have an occasional dinner with each other, the Tierney siblings (Christopher and Heather) serve meals to the Chinatown masses nightly. Pulqueria, the newest joint from the related duo behind Apotheke cocktail bar, is named after Mexico City taverns and lacks any visible signage, which forces you to blindly descend into the depths beneath a noodle shop. But the anticipation is well worth it—just like its sister (har-har) space, Pulqueria features intriguing aesthetics with genuine Mexican design material and an Aztecan look. The menu is based on the vibrant local tastes of Mexican street food with authentic dishes like fish tacos and other tiny tapas ($6-11). You won’t find such fancy cocktails on any street corner, though; mixologist Isidro Gutierrez spins a wondrous mixture of tequila and mezcal-based libations, including a tasty house specialty, the agave-based Curados de Pulque ($12). There’s also plenty of Mexican beer ($7-9) and even some local wines from our neighbor to the South ($8-15 per glass). So why don’t you give your siblings a call and set up a family shindig at a truly family-run joint?
