Queen Vic: Manhattan is filled with so-called British pubs—all that’s required is some dark wood, a flag, the requisite Irish import Guinness on tap, and a sign reading "Blackstone" or "Manchester" or such-and-such “Tavern.” But Queen Vic clearly aims to bring a wee bit more authenticity to the British Pub genre. Gilded frames of long-dead British royalty line the walls, with photos of more well-known British royalty—John, Mick, Liz—adorning the “sitting room.” Discuss the merits of the British Invasion while enjoying “High Tea” (homemade scones with fresh cream, finger sandwiches and pots of English tea, $25) around the fireplace that, while fake, seems to warm up the room. Aiming to imbibe something a wee bit stronger than tea? All of the British standards are there; Tetley’s, Bass, Stella, Newcastle, and of course, the aforementioned Irish import, Guinness. Even the menu would please the stodgiest ex-pat, with items like Shepherd’s Pie joined by the more creative “Chip Butte” (pile of chips between slices of bread and butter, $6). In fact, if you can bear all the Elton John blaring from the speakers, this spot may just be an Anglophile’s full monty. |
