Red Egg:
When the urge for fluffy pork buns and turnip cakes strikes, in-the-know New Yorkers head to their favorite Chinatown dim sum spot. But when the urge for expertly crafted cocktails in a loungey environment strikes, in-the-know New Yorkers head to…their favorite Chinatown dim sum spot? Welcome to the newly reopened and redesigned Red Egg, a restaurant/lounge/bar trifecta found on a desolate stretch of Centre St. just north of Canal. Veering off the gritty street, guests will be pleasantly surprised to find themselves in a vast contemporary space awash in red tones and soft lighting. Sure, the mirrored walls, white leather booths and space-agey lamps scream forced modernism (in an obvious attempt to be trendy), but thankfully the Red Egg doesn’t take itself too seriously. Lacking pretense, the spot is laid-back during the week (think thirty-somethings sipping $14 lychee sake-tinis) and livelier as the weekend rolls around (fueled in part by recent promoters and a DJ). Creative drinks, contemporary décor and friendly bartenders makes for a winning recipe—no MSG required!
Red Egg has become one of my favorite places in Chinatown. Incorrectly labeled as Fusion in some of the reviews, Red Egg is definitely not one of those Chino/Latino fusion places (where they think Chinese is anything that has soy sauce on it) but of dual cuisines. Met the owner who was charming and explained how he grew up with a Peruvian mother and a Chinese father. Red Egg was a reflection of his childhood and collection of favorite dishes from both cultures.
The dim sum at Red Egg is one of the best ever. A major plus for me is that in addition to the variety of Chinese dishes there is a great selection of Peruvian dishes as well. Must haves are the Red Egg's Puff, Lomo Salta, ending with the Young Coconut Pudding.

Red Egg was the bar of the day in Sheckys when I went with my friend so I was expecting something special. They have the best shrimp dumpling ever! Shrimps are fresh and the Peking style porkchops were so good! The best part of the dinner is the Young Coconut pudding, a must try! Waiters are all accommodating and food was served at a reasonable time. I'd love to come back and try other dumplings. Nice interior specially the egg shaped chairs. Good job Red Egg! Thanks Sheckys! :)
