Republic: When you first step into Republic, it’s hard to believe you’re still in New York City, let alone Union Square. The sprawling gray and white-walled space seems to go on forever with classy versions of picnic tables in the front entryway, longer tables in the back for group sake imbibing, and tables out front for watching the weekend craze of Union Square Park without participating. And was that a young, attractive crowd gathered at the bar? Indeed, the spot still manages to pull a hip clientele for after-work cocktails like the Lemonade Gimlet (gin, lemons, limes, cucumbers, simple syrup and ginger ale, $11) set to thumping party tunes. It doesn’t hurt that most drinks are available by the pitcher, so large parties can share more than just a table. Republic’s specialty is noodles, but the entire menu is tasty and reasonably priced. In fact, you could easily dine for under 20 bucks, leaving plenty of room in your wallet for those pitchers.
