Rosa Mexicano: Getting into one of these muy loco upscale Mexican joints used to be tougher than crossing the US/Tijuana checkpoint with a Spanish accent, fake passport, and piñata full of weed. Now that there are three of them, there's a little more room at the table, if not at the bar. At the uptown versions, ravenous diners-in-waiting kill time and brain cells by filling up on pomegranate margaritas ($10) in the unremarkable bar areas before finally sitting down and shoveling down an avocado orchard’s worth of fantastic guacamole, which is made at the table with cilantro, onion, tomatoes, and jalapenos. (As one might imagine, the Columbus Avenue locale draws a stately Lincoln Center crowd while 58th Street sees Midtown office folk.) The swanky but festive décor tells you that this is a ritzy run for the border, and despite what you’ve heard, your American currency doesn’t go very far here. |
