Rye House:
If you’re thinking rye whiskey instead of rye toast, you’re already on the right track. A Chelsea favorite from the brains behind Freemans and Woodson and Ford, this Rye houses an expansive bar packed with American drafts, wines and 16 varieties of the titular elixir. Predictably, almost everything in sight is made of stained wood, yet the seating is quite comfortable and the friendly staff members help explain why Rye House isn’t as “wooden” as it might initially seem. If you're in the mood for some very good eats, grab a seat in the dining room at the long communal table and dig in to The Pittsburgh Sandwich (grilled andouille sausage, house coleslaw and fries). Pair that with a large draft, and you’re still coming in under $20 (gasp!). Sure, an upscale take on flyover fare may scare those who lacking a midwestern palate—e.g., boiled peanuts or fried pickles—but who can really pass up Sloppy Joe Sliders? Open daily: 5pm - 2am
