Scarpina Bar & Grill: Though it is more restaurant than bar, Scarpina Bar & Grill (named after the ugly-faced scorpion fish) is your new spot below Union Square to unwind. Order the Scarpina signature cocktail (gin, ginger liqueur, white cranberry juice, Elderflower St Germain and cucumber, $12) or the sangria-like Corsica (white wine, pear vodka, apricot liqueur and passion fruit, $9), take a culinary tour of the Mediterranean in one of the softly lit dining areas (options include ceviches, kebabs and tagines), or sit back under the soaring ceilings to catch the game on one of two TVs. Though the manager says they close at midnight on weekends, the world music cranks up around 11pm when the younger crowd filters in, and the lights behind the bar go from gentle mode to a seizure-inducing barrage of rainbow flashes—a.k.a, party mode. So come early to relax, stay late to let loose, and thank heavens for those distracting lights if your date looks anything like the scarpina on the menu.
