Shagwong Restaurant: Back in the swinging ‘60s, this laid-back hole in the wall made for some hot rock star spotting. The playlist began with John and Yoko, and also included Keith Richards, Mick Jagger...as well as art world luminaries galore. Today, the ambiance is more savvy locals, vacationers savoring the shore, and members of a local fishing crew than celebrities, but no one seems to mind. The front room is all about rustic seafaring, with knotty wood covered in nicks and colorful fish carcass models on the walls. After all, Montauk is still a fishing town, but on a good night that's not all you can hook—choose from their selection of eight beers on draft and eight in the bottle, and then choose who to chat up in the crowd. There are a few big tables perfect for large scale beer fests, and communal table sharing is very much accepted. So go ahead and introduce yourself to your neighbor, if all goes well, you may end up sharing dinner from the adjacent restaurant, or better yet, shagging. |
