Sherwood Café: It’s hard to get away with such over-the-top, kitschy décor—like a looming, splintered Virgin Mary statue—but somehow, Sherwood Café (aka Robin des Bois) pulls it off. This is where an antique garage sale collides, under a sprawling crystal chandelier, with a wine bar and café, in a space formerly belonging to a shoe store (as evidenced by the street signage and raised window platforms). Old movie posters, a pinball machine, and funhouse mirror are among the oddities joining the dining room’s skinny tables and red banquettes, where you may opt to sit since the bar is very small. Come summer, everyone knows to enjoy their wine, French aperitifs, and well-presented cheese plates in the whimsical back garden, or Sherwood Forest, so arrive early (or late) for table space. |
