Smith's Bar & Restaurant: Standing proud on the outskirts of Times Square since 1954, Smith’s used to be one of the last classic dives of a bygone era, complete with a lunch-counter, an occasional jazz band and a blazing neon sign out front. The sign remains, but the folks behind Hell’s Kitchen’s Latitude and Social have gussied up the joint just a bit, adding a brand-new awning and a slew of polished wood tables and stools to create a more Cheers-like neighborhood vibe. The friendly staff caters to a good mix of locals, Broadway pre-gamers and the occasional tourist, with food and drink options that are much better than you’d expect. Pretty much open ‘round the clock, swing by before work for a ham, egg and cheese on a roll ($5.50), a Bud Light ($3) post-work, or for a 4am nightcap of Hell’s Kitchen Hot Wings ($.75 each) and a Dogfish Head 60 Minute ($7). In between, you’d be hard-pressed to miss any of the day’s sporting events with so many flat-screens in sight, plus enjoy free live music Wednesday through Sundays at 10pm and Karaoke Tuesday nights. It’s good that bars like this still exist in New York, it’s great that the “corporate” reboot of Smith’s has only changed it for the better.
