Restaurants have gone in and out of Smokin’ Q’s Upper East Side location, and from the décor alone, it looks like everyone left something behind. Mod light fixtures line the parameter, while a kitschy, light-up Corona bottle glares on the front wall. The red-checkered tablecloths and a roll of paper towels at each table are the only real indicators that you’re in a barbecue joint. Those towels come in handy after digging into the St. Louis style ribs ($27 for a full rack) and thin-cut french fries. The drinking set-up is also convenient—after ordering your meal at the counter, you can turn to the bar to grab your cocktail before going to your table, where your food is brought to you. The grub is homey and filling, but it’s their weekday happy hour (half-off beer and appetizers, and a free beer with any entree, from 5 to 7pm) that could keep this place around longer than those before it.
