Social Eatz: Upon first glance, Social Eatz might not be exactly what one would expect from Top Chef Season 7 and All Stars alum, Angelo Sosa—the orange and white décor is minimal, almost chain-like, sports play on the two flat-screens above the bar and the menu is laminated. But that hasn’t stopped Midtown’s well-dressed after-work crowd from huddling around the bar or packing into the wooden tables closely enough to steal a crispy fry from a stranger’s plate. The cuisine is described as American with Asian influences, a concept that extends to the drink menu with ingredients like shiso, cardemom, sriracha, sake and fish sauce making their way into the libations. Cool off after work with a Carrot and Ginger Fizz (Stoli Orange, carrot juice, Canton Liqueur, yuzu juice, ginger beer, $11), or sample one of their unique brews ($6-8) hailing from all over Asia (Lion Stout from Sri Lanka) and our own backyard (Coney Island Lager). Stay for dinner, and you’ll find that Sosa is still on top of his game, with the Bibambap Burger (a ground-beef patty topped with a six-minute egg, shredded lettuce, and pickled carrots and cucumbers) ranking as one of the city’s best. Service is extremely fast, fitting for the attention-spans of today’s social media obsessed, but not quite ideal for a leisurely meal. Then again, with nothing priced above $14, you’ll be in too big a rush to tweet about your dining experience to stay for coffee.
