South Brooklyn Pizza - East Village:
The long anticipated little sister of the original South Brooklyn Pizza in Carroll Gardens is finally opened—alas, for takeout only. Owner Jim McGown brings pizza perfection to the East Village with brick ovens that “came over with Christopher Columbus.” An old-Manhattan speakeasy ambiance is already well underway—the joint has no sign (and currently doesn’t know if adding one would take away from its whole “word of mouth” statement), one of the exposed brick walls dates from the original mid-1800s building, and a sneak peek into the coming-soon dining room reveals a cozy fireplace and intimate tables surrounded by glowing red votives. SBP ups its neighborhood bar cred with a friendly first-name basis staff, chalkboard and ingredients on display, and—also coming soon—a red velvet rope as you walk into the dining area. The trio of slices includes vegan, Sicilian and Di Faro-style, plus melt-in-your mouth garlic knots with enough of the hot stuff to ward off any creeping East Village hipsters. And while you’re waiting for that liquor license to come in (and for that rear bar to open up complete with a full menu), trash that trashy 5-Hour Energy shot and enjoy the souped-up energy of the place’s on-tap Manhattan Special (a stronger version of root beer).
