Got wine? At South Gate, they’ve got over 1,400 bottles, much of it shelved in floor-to-ceiling racks behind an impressive long marble bar. If that fact already has you groping dizzily for your bar stool, don’t worry, you can search the huge wine list on one of South Gate’s handheld touch screen computers. Of course, given that this is the Jumeirah Essex House, the vino is pricey, along with the cocktails and modern American cuisine by Chef Kerry Heffernan (formerly of Eleven Madison Park). Go for the less expensive bar menu and let the out-of-towners ooh and ahh over the park views. But never mind the tourists, this hotel restaurant overlooking Central Park is anything but a trap.
