South Houston: Although this joint serves Southern comfort and soul food, South Houston is pronounced “how-stin”—like the New York City street, not to be confused with the city in Texas. Located deep in the heart of SoHo, South Houston’s owner Michael Carpinillo has remodeled Lusso (his Italian restaurant that had become a neighborhood favorite), trading pasta for mac’n’cheese and adding in a specialty cocktail menu for good measure. Keep it local with a Grand Street Manhattan (orange and vanilla infused bourbon, Antica Formula Rouge Mermouth, whiskey barrel bitters) or head south with a Kentucky Luau (Woodford Reserve bourbon, peach schnapps, pineapple juice), both $11. Or, soon enough, you’ll be able to head right out the door with a 64oz. growler filled with the draft beer of your choice—the price varies with the drafts, which are rotated frequently to guarantee a creative and unique selection. The cuisine and vibe are as good—if not better—than before, but we’re pretty sure those growlers are what's gonna score this spot the staying power it deserves. |
