Spanky and Darla's: Spanky & Darla’s, the reincarnation of the bar formerly known as Cheap Shots, has taken great pains to change its image after an unfortunate snafu with the law and underage drinkers in early June. But the sign that greets you at the door blaming NYU kids and NYPD for the fact that “Anyone under 40 will be carded. No exceptions” is a bit of a killjoy. As is the big burly bounder who not only checks your ID, but runs it painstakingly through an ID scanner while seemingly attempting to peer into your soul—a lot to go through for a $3 pint of beer. While the décor inside is somewhat the same—neon beer signs and flatscreen TVs still light up the otherwise dark and divey bar—the black light air hockey table, the board games, and anything else that would dare attract the youngins has been eliminated. They want us all to know that this is a grown-up bar now, a sparsely populated one, but adults-only, nonetheless. Thankfully, though, the shots are still cheap. Two dollars, to be specific. Because, after all, even grown-ups like cheap shots.
