Sparrow:
When an evil landlord shuttered Tupelo, one of Astoria’s most beloved bars and only rock venues, replacing it with a big-box supermarket monstrosity, it was a tragedy. Yet owner Evan Roumeliotis soldiered on, setting up this welcome replacement across the street from the Beer Garden. It’s only celebrating its fourth anniversary, but Sparrow feels much older—in a good way—due to the weathered, recycled wood floors and faithful fan base. Black chalkboards list eight interesting beers on tap and the late-night food hours. Offering jazzed-up versions of tavern classics like fish and chips and grilled cheese with a splash of truffle oil, Sparrow is the grown-up version of Tupelo. Sadly, there are no live bands, but there’s still an indie rock vibe, which makes sense: Roumeliotis also owns Blackbird Parlor in Williamsburg. Open Mon.-Sun. until 4 am, Sat.-Sun. brunch 11am-4pm.
