SPiN:
You see it from large picture window on the 23rd St. 6-train platform: a bunch of day-traders and other khaki-wearers gathered in a basement, playing ping pong. Curious, you seek out the discrete entrance on the ground level. Voila, you've made it in to SPiN, Susan Sarandon’s ping pong retreat (yup). An impressive roster of pros have thus far gotten some serious paddling at the joint, but despite its star power, there’s a startling lack of glamour in the playing area—the florescent lights hovering over each table make the place just as fit for an interrogation as a rec room game. Things get a little more cosmopolitan in the back-lit bar though, so mind the boys wielding the ball scooper nets and make your way there for a Wally Green (a tequila-cucumber concoction named after a prominent pro, $13). Couple this with some very good neuvo pub grub (like The Saigon, a pork sandwich for $9) and you might feel like you're at a different bar—until you get whacked in the face with an errant ball. The net result: a place to bring clients.
