Steak 'n Shake Signature: Bang your head on a concrete wall and then pour about a quarter cup of salt in your mouth—that’s basically what it’s like eating at the new Midtown outlet of Midwestern fast food fave Steak ‘n Shake. Sure, the burger joint’s prime spot next to the Ed Sullivan Theater may be good for business (not surprisingly, the line was out the door), but it’s not so kind on your sanity. Past the neon-lit front awaits throngs of Times Square tourists, plucky polo’d servers pointing the way like fry-pushing flight attendants, and an open, bustling kitchen slinging out steaks (well, steak burgers), shakes and fried sides. Fight it out for a spare seat or stand at a counter by the window, that is, if you’re cool with passing pedestrians watching you gluttonously gorge yourself on giant cheeseburgers. However, bites like the NYC-exclusive Steak n’ Shake Signature, made with organic ground ribeye and New York strip, are worth the soul-sucking dining experience. With a side of seriously salty fries, the burger will only set ya back $5.99, a good deal for Midtown lunchers. Plus, the beer and wine available only at the NY outpost makes the whole mess go down way smoother.
