Sweet Grapes:
There may be some phony elements to Sweet Grapes on the Lower East Side (ahem, clusters of plastic grapes outside the front entrance and the small electric fireplace on the floor by the door), but the charm still shows through. What used to be a flower shop on Essex Street is now a teeny wine bar decorated with large sconces, a wall-mounted acoustic guitar and more of those grapes. The room is dominated by the bar, but a few small tables fill the back, and cushions line the front window to accommodate at least one more patron. The neighborhood locals are sipping wine (three reds, three whites and one sparkling) and beer (10 available by the bottle) while munching on pretzels, nuts and trail mix, and giving thanks that the prices are a buck or two less than expected (hello, $5 Amstel Light). Hungrier visitors may enjoy bar basics like Artichoke Dip ($4) and a large cheese plate ($10), but the laid-back vibe is relished by all.
