Faustina: By turning the former Table 8 into Faustina, The Cooper Square Hotel has solidified their 21-story empire. Faustina was a noble Roman empress back in the day, and while we would've been much more excited about Caligula Bar, we're impressed with Chef Scott Conant's Roman menu, with sharing selections fit for a king. The decor is both stunning and minimal...but, thankfully, in a way unlike the famously-garish glassbox hotel itself. Instead, a Tuscan wood communal table (seating twelve) is juxtaposed against an exposed wine chamber, and other furnishings dappled in beige and gold. Unfortunately, if you aren't made of gold, you may want to take that communal table: The menu was made to be shared with a larger group and a standard two-plate date will set you back. Or you could always head up to the Lounge Bar for a stiff drink like the Basil 8 (vodka, white grapes, mint, ginger ale, $14)...surprisingly, not served in a goblet. History remembers Fautstina for her noble bearing and even-keel nature, but as for this Faustina, it's all about indulgence. |
