Faustina
By turning the former Table 8 into Faustina, The Cooper Square Hotel has solidified their 21-story empire. Faustina was a noble Roman empress back in the day, and while we would've been much more excited about Caligula Bar, we're impressed with Chef Scott Conant's Roman menu, with sharing selections fit for a king. The decor is both stunning and minimal...but, thankfully, in a way unlike the famously-garish glassbox hotel itself. Instead, a Tuscan wood communal table (seating twelve) is juxtaposed against an exposed wine chamber, and other furnishings dappled in beige and gold. Unfortunately, if you aren't made of gold, you may want to take that communal table: The menu was made to be shared with a larger group and a standard two-plate date will set you back. Or you could always head up to the Lounge Bar for a stiff drink like the Basil 8 (vodka, white grapes, mint, ginger ale, $14)...surprisingly, not served in a goblet. History remembers Fautstina for her noble bearing and even-keel nature, but as for this Faustina, it's all about indulgence.

Love the food and ambiance, but the service left me leaving as small of a tip as i have ever left. With a reservation we were made to wait 40 min before we were seated. It then took at least 10 min for our drink order to be taken and our water poured, followed by at least another 30 min for our order to be taken. Mind you after waiting for close to an hour and a half for food, we are starving and we weren't even offered bread. The waiter comes back and gives a mumbled reason, but has to take two of my girlfriends' orders again, because for some reason the kitchen doesn't have it, even though he supposedly entered it. So we wait even longer for our food to come. Finally, when the food arrives, we have to ask for the bread that never came, while trying to put one of the dishes on the table it plops down and breaks in front of my friend, the under surface of my bowl was dirty, and never once during the meal were we asked how are we doing, can i get you another glass of wine. yes folks, we ordered our first glasses, and they remained empty all night long. and where was our trusty waiter... who knows. By 10pm the restaurant is for sure no longer crowded like at 8pm and still our waiter never stops by. not even an apology. you'd think that after a few weeks of a soft open, they'd have better service. good luck if you try to eat here. I'll never go back.
