Taka Taka: SoHo’s new Taka Taka boasts Mexican sushi and Japanese tacos in an attempt at a cross-cultural culinary concept...“attempt” is the operative word. The sleek spot serves up seriously sub-par sushi, peddling premade mash-up maki on a conveyor belt that snakes its way through mod booths and lacquered countertops. Rolls ($3.50-$6.50) are transported to tables on tagged, color-coded plates (color denotes price, and tag, type). Ultimately, the resto’s trendy trappings (origami walls, globe lamps) are a feast for the eyes, not the stomach. The coating on the fried surimi roll (with cucumber, avocado and Tampico dressing, $13) was rendered stale after repeat rotations on the belt, and the frequent combos of raw fish and cheese are not for the weak of stomach. The trio of tasting sauces (chipotle and wasabi mayos, Serrano-spiked soy sauce) adds a much-needed kick to otherwise orthodox sushi options (though slapping spicy sauce on sushi does not a mash-up make). The kitchen menu doesn’t fare better, with undercooked seafood in the shrimp tempura tacos ($17), a Taco-Bell-worthy tuna sashimi tostada ($11), and tuna tataki guacamole that’s inexplicably served sans chips (just try eating it with chopsticks, $12). Grab some sake or mezcal ($10 and up) at the bar—you’re going to need it to get through this meal.
