Temple of Ankh: They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, so if you’re going to smoke a hookah, it’s best to stack the odds in your favor. Enjoy a fresh apple hookah (or grapefruit, orange, or one of many other flavors, $12-$22) mixed with Fanta (yes, like the soda) at the Temple of Ankh on the Lower East Side. Pair it with something from the Middle-Eastern menu ($3.75-$18.75) like the Ankh Mix Grill (Kafta, Chicken, Shish Kebab and rice). Just don’t expect your meal to be served with a smile, as the staff is rather brusque. Fortunately, it’s easy to get distracted by the circling laser lights and unidentifiable house music. Stop by on a Friday or Saturday for a live DJ and belly dancing, but be warned—there’s no liquor license yet, so make sure you’re ready to take on the atmosphere beforehand.
