After finally catching the eye of a Greek shipping tycoon in Meze Lounge, it’s time to retire to the formal dining rooms of Thalassa for a proper meal. The expansive, multi-level restaurant manages to feel cozy thanks to the soft glow of candlelight, and the subtle nautical touches in the décor somehow err on the side of chic rather than cheesy. The Mediterranean menu changes seasonally, though mainstays like red snapper ($32) and filet mignon ($48) have kept Thalassa a downtown favorite for years. Greek specialties like Dolmas (an appetizer of stuffed grape leaves, $14) are featured, as is fresh seafood from Greece, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, West Africa and Hawaii. Don’t be intimidated if the fish is more of a jet-setter than you—just order more wine off the extensive list and tell your date how much the live music puts you in the mood for yachting on the Aegean.
