The Astor Room:
While the most glamorous star sightings in Astoria these days are the prep-school characters from Gossip Girl, a century ago the neighborhood was teeming with starlets of the burgeoning silver screen. And unlike the current schoolgirl skirt-wearing cast, actors back then actually ate food. Now, the one-time official commissary of Paramount Studios, The Astor Room, has reopened for business, serving up the same classic American dishes that reigned supreme back when the studio shuttered back in 1940. Dinner is an event in true supper club style, with patrons dressed to the nines to feast on Veal Parmagiana and Beef Wellington. No time to make a night of it? Pull up a bar stool and sip classic cocktails like the Mary Pickford (silver rum, pineapple juice, grenadine and Maraschino liqueur, $9) and screen silent films accompanied by a tuxedoed piano player. Then, order a smoked chocolate seven layer cake ($9) for dessert-to-go and sneak it into the multiplex next door—who says the movies aren’t classy anymore?
