The Bar Downstairs @ The Andaz 5th Ave.:
Remember when hotel bars meant stale carpeting, a watered-down martini and overpriced chicken fingers? Nowadays with haute joints like the Boom Boom Room, Plunge Bar and the Sky Room, it seems like the tourists have all the luck. So it’s not surprising that the modern and chic Andaz 5th Avenue has an equally modern, equally chic bar beneath it. Take the elevator to the cellar and walk through an unmarked door to the open and airy dining room, featuring exposed beams and dim hanging lights. The décor evokes the neighboring New York Public Library, with long wooden tables, round-backed chairs, and shelves featuring a mix of vintage books and wines. The cocktail menu ($15)—divided into “shaken” and “stirred,” for those as particular as Mr. Bond—is expertly crafted down to the ratio of ice to alcohol. The specialty offerings change seasonally, but you can’t go wrong with a standard dirty martini or one of their local beers. And with a small plates menu crafted with locavores in mind—they even have their own aging room for cheeses— you might find yourself wanting to check in for the night.
