The Bedford: While it takes its name from the neighborhood's bustling main avenue, The Bedford makes a distinct departure from the artsy, edgy scene that defines the new Williamsburg. A restaurant/bar in two parts—bright family dining up front, refined social club in back—The Bedford's owners hope their new spot fills the fine dining niche the neighborhood is lacking. And Mug’s Ale House it is not: the American menu is filled with seasonal ingredients; meaning consistent updates on the menu (though they promise the killer gorgonzola burger will stay). The nightlife is focused in the back room, where darkly painted tin walls, dim lighting and dark wooden furniture lend a stuffy air to the space. Park yourself in one of the leather library chairs and critique the local food movement over a glass from the extensive wine list ($7-$11). Or sit at the sizeable bar to get the story on the cocktails ($10), including hits, like the Baldini (prosecco, fresh cherry juice, peach puree, cherry bitters), and misses, like the Cactus Cooler (green chartreuse, pineapple juice and pomegranate molasses), which unfortunately tastes like the plant itself. Hopefully the bar will have its promised DJ soon, before you and Professor Plum have exhausted your academic musings and take your search for “nightlife” back out to Bedford Avenue.
