The Bodega:
There’s a bodega on every corner in New York, but this is the only one that has beer and wine that isn’t of the Olde English and Boons Farm variety. That’s because THE Bodega is actually a relaxed neighborhood joint inspired by Spain’s café culture (bodega means “wine cellar” there). The accommodating spot is run by a local married couple who serve a well-chosen yet ever-changing list of 20 wines by the glass or bottle (from $6 a glass up to $40 a bottle), two wines on draft and 12 more beer taps, to go along with bottled beer offerings such as Germany’s Aventinus ($7-22 per bottle). A very small “kitchen” (really just a single panini press and a meat-slicer) still manages to roll out some fresh-cut charcuterie and cheese along with pressed sandwiches such as The Jive Turkey and The Coppa Feel ($8 ea.) in addition to soups and salads. Food is served till 2am, brunch starts daily at 11am, and on Tuesday nights they even screen movies. Sure, you can’t grab cigarettes, condoms or lotto tickets at this bodega, but that’s a good thing.
